“Melbourne has perfect opportunities, offers financial stability, a welcoming environment and the ability to turn dreams into reality.”
Antonios Meimaris was drawn to the field of mathematics and pursued a Bachelor of Science in Pure and Applied Mathematics at the University of Athens. Impressed by his grades and passion for research, Antonios's professors encouraged him to undertake a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Liverpool, making his first move away from Greece.
In his first year at Liverpool, Antonios earned a Master's degree by research on decision making under risk and uncertainty. His research attracted the attention of Monash University, offering him the opportunity to complete his PhD studies in Melbourne. Although he had never visited Melbourne, he was impressed by the university's global reputation and the positive information about the city online. His research involved efficiently predicting outcomes based on an innovative approach for complex equations, modelling various aspects of daily life ranging from smart materials to stock market applications.
While at Monash University, Antonios also worked as a Teaching Associate. His enthusiasm and talent in teaching were recognised when he received the Teaching Excellence Award for being the best PhD Teaching Associate in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics at Monash Business School. Inspired by guest lecturers who demonstrated practical applications of complex problems, Antonios decided to explore opportunities in the industry. He currently works as a Data Scientist at SEC Newgate Research, where he builds models and indexes, conducts statistical analyses, and creates data visualisations and reports for clients. He is also the founder of Quant Lab Research Centre, where he focuses on providing strategies for organisations by using data, algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning processes. His dedication to his research and entrepreneurial success led to his inclusion in Forbes' 30 under 30 list in 2022.
In September 2022, Antonios submitted a Registration of Interest for Victorian state visa nomination for the Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 visa and received his visa in April 2023. He has built a life in Melbourne with his wife Eleonora, whom he met in Greece. They enjoy exploring Victoria, including the Mornington Peninsula, with its unique landscapes and Australian wildlife, including kangaroos and koalas. Antonios was captivated by Melbourne's vibrant culture and still remembers his first experiences in the city, from attending Australian Rules Football games to visiting the Melbourne Skydeck and learning about the city's migration history on the Sandridge Bridge. He states, “Melbourne is an amazing city where there is always something to do.”
Antonios's goals for the future include advancing his career and eventually starting a family. He is happy to call Melbourne his permanent home as “Melbourne has perfect opportunities, offers financial stability, a welcoming environment and the ability to turn dreams into reality.”
