“Life in Bendigo offers work-life balance and freedom”
Ayush Mainali, an information technology graduate from Nepal, chose La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus in Victoria for a master’s degree in Internet of Things (IoT). After completing his bachelor’s degree in busy Kathmandu, Ayush was ready for a change from city life and was drawn to the quieter pace and open space of regional Victoria.
Before moving to Victoria, Ayush led development teams in Nepal’s growing food delivery and ride sharing sector, gaining hands-on experience with fast paced innovation and new technology. His growing interest in (IoT) sparked the decision to pursue further study.
Seeking a high-quality education and a lifestyle with more space and a sense of community, Ayush made Bendigo his new home in January 2020.
While studying, Ayush continued building his career. He completed an internship at a local telecommunications company, where he took part in mapping fibre assets in Bendigo. After graduating, he secured a role as Senior Software Consultant at Spatial Partners, leading a team modelling stormwater networks.
Outside of work, Ayush enjoys time with his wife and daughter, four-wheel driving and flying lessons. “Life in Bendigo offers work-life balance and freedom. People go about their work, and still have time to catchup with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and the relaxed lifestyle.” Ayush remains closely connected to his culture and regularly attends events held by the Nepalese community at The Great Stupa.
Ayush was nominated for his Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) in October 2023 noting “the Victorian visa nomination process was straightforward”. He now encourages friends and family back home to consider Victoria “if you're planning to buy a house and get settled, definitely choose regional Victoria” as it’s more affordable than major cities. He has also inspired his sister to join him in regional Victoria and pursue a similar path.
