“The local community in regional Victoria is very supportive, everyone comes forward to help each other.”
Originally moving to Australia from Pakistan for study, Awais relocated to Woodside in regional Victoria in 2020 after completing a master’s in social work at Federation University.
Awais works as a case manager, supporting people aged 65 and over with complex clinical and social needs. Through his work, he has become a trusted and valued member of the local community. “I feel really proud of my contribution,” he says, reflecting on the difference he makes in the lives of older Australians.
Awais has found regional Victoria to be welcoming and inclusive. “The local community in regional Victoria is very supportive. Everyone comes forward to help each other.” His role has helped him to build strong relationships with clients and families from diverse backgrounds. “Victoria is a great multicultural state. People respect others’ views.”
Since receiving his Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491), Awais has embraced the relaxed and scenic lifestyle of regional Victoria. On weekends, he often visits local beaches, Woodside Beach and Port Albert are favourites. He also enjoys flying his drone in nature, with less restrictions than in big cities, capturing stunning videos and photos of the landscapes and coastlines. He has also developed new hobbies in the area. While driving through the countryside, he noticed locals riding horses, which sparked a new interest. “I decided to try horse riding, so now I do that every weekend as well”.
The slower pace of life and strong sense of community have made regional Victoria feel like home. Awais’s journey reflects the opportunities and sense of belonging that regional Victoria offers to skilled migrants.
