“Being able to have a good lifestyle at any stage of your career made me want to stay in Melbourne. I do not think many other cities can give you that same opportunity.”

Artemio’s first experience in Melbourne was as an undergraduate student. The recipient of a Peace Scholarship from the Mexican government and IDP Education Australia, Artemio was able to study at Victoria University for a year. Artemio fell in love with the Melbourne lifestyle and knew he wanted to return to live and work here permanently.

The friendliness of the people, the security, affordability, and ease of life drew Artemio to come back to Melbourne after completing his master’s degree in Mexico. After learning about the Bionic eye project at the University of Melbourne, Artemio chose Melbourne as the location to complete his PhD in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Artemio continues to work at the University of Melbourne as a Research Fellow in computational Neuroscience.

Artemio works closely with Seer Medical who are Australia’s largest provider of epilepsy diagnostic services. He uses electroencephalography recordings from epilepsy patients to inform computational models. Artemio builds computational models to understand the link between micro-scale neural dynamics at the cellular level and macro-scale brain activity at the neural population level. The work Artemio is doing not only helps the research and science fields but will help to better treat patients with epilepsy.

“Being able to have a good lifestyle at any stage of your career made me want to stay in Melbourne. I do not think many other cities can give you that same opportunity.”

Outside of work, Artemio enjoys spending time with his wife Marcela and their greyhound dog. Artemio and Marcela both enjoy going to art exhibitions, live music concerts and film festivals. Artemio loves the fact that they rarely need to use a car as everything is easily accessible by public transport or bicycle.

Artemio was nominated for a Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190). Find out more about Victoria's skilled migration visas.
