When we talk about Melbourne as a city, we're talking about metropolitan Melbourne. Also known as Greater Melbourne, metropolitan Melbourne is the geographical area that defines Melbourne as a city and the capital of the state of Victoria.

Spanning over 9990 km2 metropolitan Melbourne is home to 4.9 million people. With people from more than 200 countries, we're known as Australia's most culturally diverse city.

Victoria is divided into 79 local government areas – with 31 of them located in metropolitan Melbourne. Local councils provide a wide variety of services to their municipalities and enforce federal, state and local laws. You can learn more about local councils on the Know Your Council website.
