Sydney was Sontosh’s first choice when he was thinking of moving to Australia but the work opportunities were in Melbourne and now he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Migrant Santhosh Jose, who moved to Melbourne, Australia from India shares his story about settling into a new country and what he loves about Melbourne.

“We love the buzz here, the multiculturalism and the foods – it’s a really laid-back lifestyle but there is the professional environment as well, which is quite thriving and upcoming,” the IT specialist said.

“We applied for permanent residency, while I was in Melbourne, and I got it and when my family moved over here we just loved it as it’s like Bangalore where we are from.

“There’s plenty of opportunities for anyone who wants to fast track their career, but at the same time, it’s not as fast paced or hectic as Sydney.”

Sontosh appointed a migration agent to assist them with applying to migrate to Victoria, but he also did his own research and found the process straightforward.
“I love the ‘Live in Victoria’ website...I was quite impressed with the transparency of the process.  As well as how the Department was up to the mark with communication, every time I called them…so overall the process was good in migrating to Victoria.”
When Sontosh moved to Australia with his wife Anne and two young daughters, they quickly found the community support and services they needed with a family, he said.

“We were in a new country and Anne was managing two children, while I was working, so we had a very good playgroup – and the church, and the community centres, there was a lot of support from them as well,” Sontosh said.

“The girls have absolutely loved the place…and I think the health care system was very good, travelling with a young child, check ups, vaccinations - coming to a new country where you don’t know a lot of things, we found the health care system was set up beautifully well, all quite process driven.”

Working as a project manager for IBM means that Sontosh spends time away from family, meeting clients across Australia – so when he’s home one of his favourite past times is to go to the local library with his daughters to browse and select books to read together.

“For me, family is the most important thing, and I like to manage and give as much time with the girls,” he said.

“The way I like to balance it is when I come back from work is to take it easy, not put in as much work as I do when I am on the road…I like to spend as much time as possible with the girls when I’m here, and do things they’ve already lined up - they already have this checklist to do when Daddy is back.

“I also like to pay some attention to myself…go out for a ride, or hang out with some mates…I try to keep that balance as much as I can.”
