The Department of Immigration and Border Protection is making a number of changes to the 457 visa program and other employer sponsored visas. Visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website to find out more about these changes.

Employers in regional Victoria can use the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme to fill skill shortages.

If you’re an employer in a regional, remote or low population growth area of Victoria, the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187) lets you sponsor overseas skilled workers for permanent residence to fill skill shortages in your business.

In Victoria, this visa covers all areas of the State except Melbourne - see the list of eligible postcodes for the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187).

Regional Certifying Bodies

Regional Certifying Bodies are organisations approved (gazetted) by the Commonwealth Government to have a role in assessing Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187) applications. Regional Certifying Bodies are required to assess employer nominations under the Direct Entry Stream of the subclass 187 visa and provide advice to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. They assess as to whether:

  • there is a genuine need for the position
  • the position cannot be filled locally
  • the terms and conditions of employment are equivalent to those paid to an Australian in the same workplace.

Regional Certifying Bodies make no final decisions and do not approve or refuse visas.
